«Egremni» Beach

Since 2015

"The Egremni Challenge"

The beach is located at the southwest coast of the island. The access to the beach was established during the 90’s and since then the Beach gain a huge reputation. By the early years of 00’s “Egremni Beach” was already highly praised by touristic portals & magazines all over the world. Those days the beach was regarded as on of the most awe-inspiring seashores in the Mediterranean Sea. On November of 2015 an earthquake shakes the Ionian region and this natural phenomenon caused a landslide at the area of Egremni which eventually damaged the beach and its access. The “old” concrete stairs leading to the beach were covered by soil in some of their sections but the last wooden part of the stairway was fully damaged. The next years to come eventhough the access to the beach by land was a real challenging process there were always locals and tourists who, defying the danger, went down to the beach enjoying its even wilder and secluded beauty.
On 2021 almost six years after the earthquake accident the beach was accessible again by land. Renewing the road and installing new stairs to Egremni Beach was a challenging job, mainly because of safety, and thus the project was half-delivered and given in function since the summer season of 2021. Although the new project has increased significantly the extend of safety, approaching the beach still remains a challenge for the visitors.

More specifically, visitors who decide to reach the beach by the means of any vehicle should be aware that they will have to park their vehicle about 1.3 km away from the beginning of the stairs. No vehicle can cross further than the parking area because official assessments and studies prevent the Municipality of Lefkada from reopening a part of the road to the public. Nevertheless, the beach is accessible to the public, on foot, but at their own risk.  Due to this fact visitors will have to walk a distance of 1.3 km with an incline of 15%, from the metallic gate to the beginning of the stairway, and then to go down approximately 400 steps. Just before going down the stairway a small traditional cafe/bar can be found with a panoramic view to the beach.

Despite the difficulties of the route “Egremni Beach” will fulfill the expectations even of the most demanding visitor. Walking down the new stairway will provide to visitors the unique opportunity to capture photos of unparalleled natural beauty. Due to the large size of the beach and the wild nature of the secluded area an “out of civilization” feeling will accompany you for as long as you will remain on the beach. Now you are well informed and it is thoroughly up to you whether or not you will undertook the adventure of the Egremni Challenge!
